I have just looked at the new web site for profiling surnames on a Geographical basis. Entering the <DIAPER> surname for the 1881 and 1988 surveys yields some interesting results.

The maps show that the DIAPER name was common not only around the Southampton and Romsey areas in 1881 but also in Suffolk!!! The 1988 maps show a spread from the 'starting' points. In the rest of the UK there is virually no other DIAPER surnames. So if fishing was the main occupation of the DIAPER families then it would be reasonable to expect some migration to the East Anglian ports such as Lowestoft.

The web site to check this out is : www.spatial-literacy.org
