Fisherman, Ferryman, Sailor, Spy - Heritage Trail & Events

A new heritage trail leaflet has been devised to complement the forthcoming exhibition Fisherman, Ferryman, Sailor, Spy to be held at the Southampton Maritime Museum from July. The leaflet has been produced by the Diaper Heritage Association with support from Awards for All and sponsorship from Red Funnel Ferries.

“We are delighted to be supporting this heritage leaflet which uncovers a hidden part of Southampton’s maritime history”, says Chris Lambert of Red Funnel, “The company has a long connection with the Diapers who have crewed for Red Funnel for four generations.”

The trail will guide readers from the historic Itchen Ferry village in Peartree, across the River Itchen and around the historic old town of Southampton, telling the story of the Diapers over the last five hundred years and their links with many of Southampton’s most famous landmarks.

The events programme includes dramatisations of remarkable aspects of the family history such as their role in the notorious and landmark court case; The Crown v Dudley, concerts of traditional ferry songs, readings from Tom Diaper’s Log, guided walks around the old ferry village, talks by specialist historians on the J Class yachts and the screening of a newly commissioned film.
