Funding & Sponsorship

We are pleased to announce that the Diaper Heritage Association has been awarded £42600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support our exhibition and events programme. With the money we have already achieved we are now very close to our target. Our part of the partnership funding is £2000 and donations stand at £425 so we need to raise just £1575. (donations to Diaper Heritage Association, 31 New Road, Fair Oak SO50 8EN)

We also have meetings with some possible corporate sponsors, Red Funnel & The Dolphin (thanks to David Diaper), & Walking Distance (thanks to Jo Cooper). Other support comes from Awards for All & Southampton City Council.

Nearly 5000 entries and many photographs have been scanned. The tree will be produced in several formats, a mini tree will form part of the display at the exhibition and the full tree will also be on display in book form and on computer. For those who want individual copies these will be available in either CD format or as a printed descendants report, this will record not only the family tree but all information on source material and original photographs. There is a small charge to cover costs & administration of £9.99 for the CD version, we are still researching costs for the book version and will let you know shortly. Cheques payable to the Diaper Heritage Association. Write to 31 New Road, Fair Oak, Southampton SO50 8EN or telephone 023 80 602195 to order.

Exhibition Themes

Thanks to those who are donating items for the exhibition, the cut off date for this phase is the end of April. The exhibition will then be designed and the artefacts collected and installed ready for July 14 th opening. There are several themed sections: Early Days (primarily archive material from 18 th & 19 th century), Itchen Ferry Village – Family Life, The Captain’s Table (which will also be the backdrop for dramatised readings etc), & At Sea. There will also be the genealogical & oral history section. Features will include film screened on a giant sail, sound scape & costumed characters.

Our thanks to Clare Watson the exhibition designer for designing the association logo for us.

Objects still needed

We are short on objects associated with Tom Diaper of The Log, many of his possessions were lost during the blitz when the family home was bombed but if anyone has anything tucked away, let us know ASAP.

Press Coverage

Watch out for BBC TV report on the upcoming exhibition to be aired in April.

Oral History

Letters are going out inviting people to take part in the oral history project, if you haven’t previously said you would like to take part please call 023 80 222482 to arrange an interview. We are particularly interested in those with memories of life in Itchen Ferry, of fishing, sailing, what life was like for the Diaper women. If you would like to write down some of your memories you can send to DHA 121 Bernard St, Southampton SO14 3EA or email to

Web Site

We have so much information that not everything is going to fit into the area we have available for the exhibition but thanks to the lottery and the contacts of Sue Diaper we will be launching a Diaper Heritage Association website to run alongside the exhibition.

Diaper Trail leaflet

During April we will be producing the Diaper Heritage Trail leaflet which will include a tour around buildings and sites in Southampton and the Isle of Wight associated with historic Diapers. It also will contain some of the stories we have researched and a comprehensive events list. We are planning to print 5000 and everyone on the database will receive one, if you would like more or can help distribute please ring 023 80 222482
