The Diaper website has been set up and over the next month will be loaded with a host of information: a virtual exhibition, news & events message board, genealogy, latest research, audio and video files. Sponsored by Lapworth Consultancy (thanks to Sue Diaper) and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund it will be a great new resource both for those doing serious research and those interested in local and family history.

Fisherman, Ferryman, Sailor, Spy- 14 July 2006 – 3 March 2007

Martyn Ware known as a founder of Human League and Heaven 17 is also an expert in designing soundscapes, he has created work for exhibitions in Sheffield and the V& A and is now working on a proposal for the sound element of the Diaper exhibition. The background sound will include sounds of the sea, the ferry, the ferry village, snatches of conversation and song and will be an hour in length and run on a continuous loop. We hope it will also be available on disk for people to keep.

Family Tree

Enclosed is the order form for CD and book of the tree, we have sourced suppliers who can produce small print runs at reasonable costs. If you would like copies please return the form immediately as we have a tight deadline to have the book printed in time for the exhibition opening (as it will also be one of the exhibits.

Oral History

Sheila Jemima of Southampton Oral History unit will be overseeing the Diaper Oral History project, supported by the Heritage Lottery, and the memories collected will appear on the web site as well as being stored for posterity in the Oral History archives. Anna Welch will be lead interviewer and will be contacting interviewees over the coming months. The project will run for the duration of the exhibition and will be an archive legacy when the exhibition finishes.

Making Sail

Awarding winning film maker, Crispian Cook, has started work on a creative documentary film on the Diapers of Itchen Ferry, supported by Awards for All. Using a mix of archive film, new footage and interviews the film will be screened as part of the exhibition but also exhibited separately including a special screening with readings from Tom Diaper’s log as part of our events programme in the coming year.

Heritage Trail

The new trail leaflet is being distributed, it includes a self guided trail, stories on a few Diaper ‘characters’ and the events programme, so put dates in your diary! A more detailed events leaflet will also be produced. Thanks to David Diaper we secured sponsorship from Red Funnel Ferries for this publication.

Southampton in Song

Brian Hooper and Jeff Henry are popular local folk singers who have recorded many traditional songs, including ‘Poll of Itchen Ferry’ and ‘The Itchen Ferry Song’ which they reconstructed from the single surviving verse that was at that time known. We approached the duo with a fragment of another Itchen Ferry village song, ‘The click ma Doodle’ just a couple of lines survived about a strange noise in a bush in the village, that locals thought was the devil (probably after spending too much time in the Yacht tavern!!). An expedition was mounted against the bush when it was discovered the ‘devil’ was actually an abandoned alarm clock. Using a lot of the old sailing nicknames from the village, Brian has composed a new song especially for the launch of the exhibition. You can see them perform in December and order their ‘ Southampton in Song’ Cd by ringing 02380 340749 or emailing Brian at
