The web site is now up and running and although there are still items to add, particular on display objects from the exhibition, we hope you enjoy the content so far. We would like to include articles on Diaper connections from other areas so anyone who is researching Diapers from Gloucester, East Anglia and other far flung outpost please feel free to email or post in copy: e-mail Cheryl or to 121 Bernard St, Southampton SO14 3EA

Family Tree Books & CDS

Thanks for all the orders and they are being processed, and will be ready for distribution shortly. Please note if you are ordering more than one copy its £2 each (they are awfully heavy!!) Contact Angie Turtle on 023 80 602195

Don’t forget to reserve your places for the many and varied events, most are free however seats are limited and its also good for us to know how popular things are (or otherwise) so we know how much more promotion to do. Events Hot Line 023 8071 5105

We have started to see a number of articles on the exhibition appearing – if you spot anything in any magazines etc please send us a copy thanks. So far we have seen articles in Ancesters Magazine and Yachting Monthly as well as newspapers and we are still waiting for BBC South to screen their piece.

Filming & Oral History

Our film crew have been out filming historic Itchen ferry hoys in action and our interviewers are about to undertake their training session for the Oral History project on 27th June. We are also going to have a free phone line so that you can listen to some extracts and record your memories as well. If you would to be interviewed contact Anna Welch on 0781 825 1095

Folk Song Remembered

One of our members has let us know about another original song from the Ferry Village and we hope that it will be performed with others at our Christmas time event at the Museum later this year. If you know any old songs, write them down or record them and send them into us, they are as precious as any of the artifacts on show in the exhibition.

Please help to promote our exhibition by displaying the enclosed poster in your window, or at a local shop, library, community centre, heritage centre, office or other venues where people congregate.

Civic Service

We have had confirmation from the Mayor’s office that the mayor will be attending the Civic Service on September 24th at Pear Tree Church. Our thanks to Florrie Taylor who is organising the service content and Sue Diaper who is handling the invitations to VIPs, and of course to the vicar Paul Firmin. The local Itchen Sea Scout are providing a guard of honour and the local school a choir and we hope to dress some of the Diaper graves with suitable tributes on the day. The service is multi-dominational will take the form of a Victorian hymnody ‘Songs of Praise’ and you are welcome to get into the spirit by dressing appropriately as ‘Itchen Ferry Folk’! For further information contact Sue Diaper on 07768 206391 or e-mail

Educational Visits

From Autumn schools will be offered free visits to the ‘Fisherman, Ferryman, Sailor, Spy’ exhibition and the museum’s education officer Deborah Herridge would like to include an interview session with ‘senior’ members of the Diaper Family, so if you are available for a couple of hours during the day and would like to take part telephone Cheryl Butler 023 80 688187 or 023 80 222483.
