Exhibition Launch

The exhibition and events programme have got off to a flying start and we have had some very positive responses. We are a bit short of completed evaluation forms for the exhibition (which we have to do as part of our criteria for the Heritage Lottery grant) so if you have been already or are planning to attend please complete the enclosed form and send it back with your comments. Thanks. Please note the museum is Closed on Mondays, a few people hadn’t picked that up and had a wasted trip.

We have some fantastic events coming up, including some additional events not before listed (see below). Can we also ask if you reserve a place on events and then find you are unable to attend you let us know, as we have had some events that were full with waiting lists and then booked attendees did not turn up. Thanks.

Civic Service

The Mayor of Southampton will be at the service at Peartree Church on September 24 th at 5pm, in his capacity as Admiral of the Port of Southampton. We will have choirs, guards of honour, singing and everyone is also encouraged to come along in Victorian costume! So look forward to seeing everyone there, costumed or in mufti.

Future diary date, we are looking to have a conference on 4 March, the final weekend of the exhibition, as a chance for as many people as possible to get together, with talks, discussions, networking & a nice lunch! Further details in next newsletter but pencil the date in the diary

Guided Walk

We are pleased to announce another ‘Meet the Ancestors’ walk courtesy of the Friends of Southampton Cemetery. This one will be touring around Southampton’s old cemetery on the common, which apparently also has a large collection of late Diapers. Date tba.

Family Archive Day

As the first day was totally over subscribed the Southampton Archive service are planning a second day it must be pre-booked Tel 023 8060 2195 for further information

Education Trail Leaflet

Please find enclosed the newest edition to our leaflets, the Education leaflet is designed to guide you around the maritime museum linking existing exhibits with the Diapers, you finish up at the Fisherman, Ferry, Sailor, Spy exhibition.

Family Tree Volume

Following requests we have produced a draft version of the family tree in book form, we were concerned that that type and photos might be too difficult to see but having taken the ‘dummy’ round to various events there has been a lot of interest. It will be a companion volume to the ancestors report volume many of you ordered. As with that volume we need to get pre-orders so we can give firm numbers to the printers, so if you are interested please fill in the enclosed order form. We also have a few copies left of the ancestors volume and CD version if anyone would like copies of those. We can also take this opportunity to add more photos and more branches to the tree, so if anyone has family photos they would like to see on their part of the tree or any additional genealogy information please send them in to Angie or Julie (contacts below). Depending how quickly orders come in we may be able to turn this second volume around for Christmas (nice stocking fillers!!)

Oral history

Interviewers are all trained and recording equipment purchased and at long last interviews are underway. We have also set up an Oral History phone line where you can listen to some extracts, and even record your own memories. The freephone number is 0800 078 9083

Future Publications

As well as the family tree volume we are considering a book/cd linked to the oral history/sound archive and are also investigating the possibility of a reprint or new edition of ‘Tom Diaper’s Log’. A new edition would have a new foreword, explanatory footnotes and additional photographs. It is likely that we will also need to show that there is an interest in such a book, so in the next newsletter we will be collecting expressions of interest.

Web Articles

We are keen to publish any new research and information on any branch of the Diaper family to keep the web site fresh and interesting, so please submit any material to Cheryl

Boat Show 15-24 September

DHA will be sharing a stand with Southampton Museum Service during the Southampton Boat Show to further promote the exhibition and events programme.

Please note that in some leaflets the date for the talk ‘Disasters & Diseases & Diapers’ has been wrongly printed as 8th Nov, the talk is on the 7 th Nov.
