No 11 February/March 2007

It's hard to believe that it is 2 years since the Diaper Heritage Association was formally constituted and we are on the final lap of our great project.

Family Conference day 4th March, Dolphin Hotel, Southampton

Our guest speaker for the day is the author Chris Pomery, who has written a book about DNA and genealogy, so perhaps he will help us solve the mystery of where the Diapers originated from. We will also have a review of the year and the latest on the family tree which is now 7,000 strong. The new family tree book is due to be ready for the 4 th March and will be available at the conference. If you haven't booked yet there are a few places available please contact Angie on 023 80 602195. There is a small charge of £10 to cover the buffet lunch cost. We need to confirm catering numbers by 28 th February. If you have lost your booking form you can still send names of attenders, your address and cheque for £10pp (made out to DHA) to 31 New Rd, Fair Oak, Eastleigh SO50 8EN.

Southampton's Marquis and other mariners

The family of Gerald Mornington, author of the book about Peartree Green from 1740-1840 and its links with the Marquis of Lansdowne, have donated copies of the book to the Association to be sold to raise funds. Get your copies at the conference.

Downing Street Petition

A petition is being gathered to present to Downing Street on March 8 th to request that there be a reduction in the release of Census material from 100 years to 70. To support this petition go to

Final Events

Enclosed with this newsletter are details of events happening in March, please note that the walk around the cemetery on Southampton Common is also available at 11am as well as the original 2pm slot. Please note that the event ‘The Search for John Diaper’ is now fully subscribed. If you have booked but can no longer attend please let Gloria know as we have a waiting list.

New on the Website,

The website is being updated and new information being loaded. If you check past events you will find lots of information from the talks and walks that have been staged by the Association, so if you missed some of these you can still get a flavour of what went on. More information will be added over the next few weeks including articles on the Dibles of Dibles wharf, the Diaper who was transported to Australia, and the Gosport Diapers. If you have anything of interest for the website please send to Cheryl

Rev Davies Historical Pageant

Our final event moves to Pear Tree where a host of activities will be staged on the afternoon of 22 April between 12-5. This includes a new piece of promenade theatre when the Sarah Siddons Fan Club will romp through 600 years of Peartree history in 60 minutes. There will be exhibition stands, displays, songs and storytelling, tours and displays. A leaflet detailing the programme will be sent out with the next newsletter.

The Oral History Project

Our interviewers have conducted around 20 interviews to date. These interviews will be transcribed and along with the original interview this will be deposited in the archives. We hope to use these interviews as well as other information collected over the last couple of years to produce a souvenir publication 'Voices of Itchen Ferry' (working title) more details to follow in the next newsletter.

Report & Evaluation

The organising committee are starting to prepare the final report and evaluation document for the Heritage Lottery Fund. We will be analysing all the evaluation sheets filled in by visitors to the exhibition and attenders at our many events. Any thoughts or comments you wish to make will be gratefully received. Please send to any member of the organising committee.

End of the Exhibition

The exhibition, Fisherman, Ferryman, Sailor, Spy – The Diapers of Itchen Ferry closes on the 4 th March and on the 5 th March museum staff will dismantle the exhibition. Those who lent objects will be contacted by Rachel Wragg, the curator, to arrange for their return. We hope some of the information panels will find a new home at Peartree Church. The organising committee will also start work on preparing the Diaper Archive which will be lodged with the archives in Southampton as resource for future family historians. Although we have discovered 7,000 family members there are still gaps and still more work to do tying up loose ends and linking into other Diaper enclaves.

Tom Diaper's Log

The final thing we would like to achieve before signing off the Diaper project with the Heritage Lottery Fund in July is to find a publisher who will be willing to print a new edition of the Log, along with added footnotes and new introduction, setting Tom Diaper into the context of the wider family and community of Itchen Ferry. So watch this space!
