Family Day Conference

A very successful weekend saw visitors to the maritime museum on Saturday 3rd March nearly 3 times as many as would have normal visited at that time of year. 60 delegates also enjoyed Chris Pomeroy's talk on 'DNA & Geneology' which posed the question of whether the next step for the Association is a DNA project. This project takes samples from direct male descendants and identifies the key markers for the family. This would enable us to see if other branches of the family all come from a common ancestor or whether there are Diapers who did not originate from Itchen Ferry. Another impromptu talk was given by Robin Bryer who donated 200 copies of his father's book 'Southampton's Marquis & other Mariners' to the association to help with fund raising. The book tells stories about Itchen Ferry village and the Bryer & Cooksey families in the 18th & 19th century. The talk was so entertaining over 20 copies were sold on the spot. If you would like a copy please send £5 with your name & address to Angie.

Family Tree Volume

The Family Tree Book Volume 2 (a companion to our Family Tree report book) was also launched at the conference. Featuring over 7000 entries as well as hundreds of family photos and images of the Ferry village, yachts and other places connected with the Diapers. 75 copies have been and we have 25 copies still available at £25.00+£5.00 p&p. All copies of volume 1 are now sold, but if you would like a copy please contact Angie Turtle as we can have more printed on demand in batches of 10 price at £18.00+£5.00p&p. There are 6 copies of volume one in CD version still available at £9.99+£2.00 p&p.

Save the Archives

Those family members who are studying genealogy, as well as other scholars of history will know what a valuable resource the Southampton City Archives are. They hold a unique collection of documents not available anywhere else. In recent budget cuts the opening times of the archives has been reduced to just 2 days a week with no late night openings. Letters to the mayor/chief executive/leader of the council/local press may lead to a change of heart. Please write. If this had happened a year ago it is unlikely we would have been able to find so many Diaper ancestors.

Oral History

20 interviews have been undertaken by our interviewers and we have a few more to do before this phase of the project is completed at the end of April. If you want to take part please contact Anna & you still have time to listen to some extracts from the oral history archive on our free phone number 0800 0789083. When all the interviews are transcribed extracts from them as well as from the written stories that have been sent to us will be put into book form.

Rev Davies

Our last event! On the afternoon of the 22 April join us at Peartree church for theatre, song, talks, films and exhibitions. Its all free, but a donation to the church restoration fund would be appreciated. See enclosed leaflet for details.

Web site

The first phase of the web update has been completed. There is a lot of new information and research material from previous events so have an explore. Additional research and more photographs will be loaded in due course. We would also like to thank Rock IT Group for continuing their sponsorship of our website for another year.

Maritime Museum

The Museum service has asked permission to retain a copy of the film we made for our exhibition, so that it remains a permanent exhibit. It can be seen on the lower ground floor on the moniter at the back of the building. The information about John Diaper of the Titanic will also stay as part of the permanent Titanic exhibition.

The Future of the DHA

We are still collecting feedback so please either make your comments via the website comment board, or write to our secretary at 31 New Rd Fair Oak, Soton SO50 8EN. Our project will finish in July when the committee will make its final report to the Heritage Lottery Fund and when we prepare the Diaper Archive for the Southampton archive office. So do we:

  • Close the project and wind up the DHA?
  • Just keep the website going?
  • Continue to update the genealogy?
  • Produce occasional newsletters?
  • Are there any volunteers to take on committee work?

Please let us know.
