'Hidden History' Oral History Project Itchen Ferry Village

The Diaper Heritage Association is launching a major maritime oral history project at Southampton Boat Show. The team are looking for people who lived and grew up in the old fishing and sailing community of Itchen Ferry Village on the banks of the Itchen at Woolston. The project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and has the support of Southampton’s prestigious Oral History Unit.

Trained interviewers will record the oral testimony which will be deposited at the Oral History Unit for future scholars, the public and local historians to study.

This is the last chance for us to capture memories about the village which was all but destroyed by Second World War bombing’ says Anna Welch project leader, ‘We ran some trial interviews last year and collected some marvellous stories ancedotes and valuable insights about life before the war in a unique community’.

If people would like to take part in the project they would need to be able to set aside approximately two hours for the interview. The interviewer will record individual life story and these will later be transcribed and a master copy deposited in the archives. Extracts may, with permission, be used in the future, in the work of the unit of as part of the Diaper Heritage project; this includes, talks, publications, for public access and the W.W.W. There is also a free phone line available for those who want to record their memories in that way and where you can listen to extracts from previous interviews.
